In this series, we will be profiling music professionals from all facets of the industry to learn more about their involvement in the CARAS Academy Delegate program.
Andrew Chee-A-Tow is a Senior Graphic Designer at Universal Music Canada as well as a member of CARAS’s Album Artwork Advisory Committee. Andrew joined the Delegate program in 2020 to become more involved in the Canadian music industry and celebrate the contributions of the artists within it.
What inspired you to become an Academy Delegate?
I wanted to bring my creative and design perspective to the academy. I currently work in the music industry, so I joined CARAS to feel even more involved in the Canadian music community.
Why is it important to be active in the Canadian music industry?
It connects different people with different backgrounds and cultures, all while amplifying the music that comes from Canada. It creates a community of people who share that one common interest which is the love of music.
What do you enjoy most about being an Academy Delegate?
Being able to have a voice for artists who want to be recognized for their contributions to the Canadian music industry.

Why do you think it’s important to promote and celebrate Canadian music and artists?
There is so much musical talent within Canada – past and present that deserves the spotlight in all aspects and areas of the industry. It’s important for upcoming talent to know that Canada has a big part in shaping the future music industry worldwide.
Why is diversity within the Academy Delegate program and the Canadian music industry so essential?
The music industry within itself is very diverse, especially if you look at all the genres and categories there are. It’s important to have the same diversity reflected within the academy so having representation from all backgrounds and experiences is very necessary.
What has been your favourite JUNOS moment?
My favourite moment from the JUNOS was watching Deborah Cox being inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
How does being an Academy Delegate allow you to help shape the industry?
It’s a great way to have your voice heard in an industry that is always changing and evolving. CARAS encourages forward and innovative thinking so your ideas and contributions will be what shapes the music industry going forward.
