VOCAL JAZZ ALBUM OF THE YEAR | Amanda Tosoff | | The JUNO Awards

Amanda Tosoff is a B.C-raised, Toronto-based pianist/composer with five albums to her credit. She has performed with such internationally recognized artists as Ingrid Jensen, Emilie-Claire Barlow, Phil Dwyer, Christine Jensen, Brad Turner, Kelly Jefferson and Jodi Proznick; has also opened for legends Bobby Hutcherson, Renee Rosnes, Oliver Jones and Brazilian singer Luciana Souza; and has received awards such as the Montréal Jazz Festival Grand Prix de Jazz and the 2016 Toronto Arts Foundation Emerging Jazz Artist Award.

On her new release Words, Tosoff takes an adventurous leap beyond the confines of conventional jazz. She has taken poems and lyrics that possess a personal resonance for her and framed them in original new compositions that utilize vocals for the first time (sung by highly-regarded singer Felicity Williams of such bands as Hobson’s Choice, Broken Social Scene and Bahamas). The result is a collection of songs that are jazz at their core, but also contain elements from art-song and folk.

Since releasing Words, Tosoff has toured Canadian Jazz festivals and clubs, and has garnered much critical acclaim – Words was even included on the 2016 Polaris Prize “Longer List,” alongside such notable Canadian artists as Emilie-Claire Barlow and Neil Young.
