L. Stu Young is a JUNO Award–winning producer and mix engineer whose work spans generations of Canadian music — from legendary performers to emerging innovators. Based in Toronto, Stu has collaborated with an extraordinary range of artists including Prince, Burton Cummings, SUM 41, Anne Murray, Triumph, Prairie Oyster, Great Big Sea, David Wilcox, Downchild Blues Band and rising experimental artist Saya Gray, recently nominated for the 2025 Polaris Music Prize (Solaris Award).
Originally from Ottawa, Stu began his career in campus radio at Carleton University before graduating from Fanshawe College’s renowned Music Industry Arts (MIA) program. He went on to spend a decade as Chief Engineer at Metalworks Studios in Mississauga, helping define the sound of numerous Canadian and international artists. His engineering on Prince’s Musicology earned him the JUNO Award for Recording Engineer of the Year, followed by a nomination for 3121. He later received a Canadian Screen Award for Best Sound for Songs of Freedom, the acclaimed Measha Brueggergosman documentary.
Stu’s work is marked by a rare combination of technical mastery and musical instinct. Whether capturing the timeless voice of a seasoned icon like Burton Cummings or the boundary-pushing textures of Saya Gray, he brings honesty, precision, and emotional depth to every project.
