Disaster Pony, a jazz/EDM fusion band led by Toronto saxophonist and composer Gordon Hyland, has quickly made a name in Canada’s live music scene. Hyland, known for his work with cover band Dwayne Gretzky, joined forces with Adam Hindle (formerly of Born Ruffians) and Ian Docherty (July Talk) to create a unique, genre-blending sound.
Influenced by electronic artists like Amon Tobin, Bonobo, and The Herbalist, Disaster Pony’s approach replaces traditional samples with live, improvisational recordings. Hyland, Hindle, and their collaborators reassemble these sessions into lush, groove-heavy tracks inspired by artists such as Madlib, MF Doom, and Beastie Boys. The result is a record that’s deeply layered, tape-saturated, and saxophone-driven.
Signed with Lovetown Records, Disaster Pony launched their debut with a sold-out show at Toronto’s Array Space, featuring a 10-piece ensemble. The band has since toured across Ontario and Quebec, played festivals like NXNE and the Markham Jazz Festival, and gained radio play in North America and Europe. In June 2024, they achieved #5 on the !Earshot Canadian Jazz Charts, solidifying their place in Canada’s jazz and electronic music landscape.
