Born Kira Huszar in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada, LOONY never shied away from her suburban roots, inviting labels to showcases at bars in her hometown. From the release of her debut single “A Small Flame” in 2018, she collaborated with producer Akeel Henry, a protege of Noah “40” Shebib (best known for his work with Drake). Singles “Some Kinda Love” and “GOOD GAME” caught fire in 2019 and 2020 (the former nominated for a SOCAN Songwriting award in Canada), and no less an elder statesman than Elton John proclaimed his love for her work on his Rocket Hour radio show. By the time she released her first EP, JOYRiDE, the world was one month into lockdown due to COVID-19. Undeterred, she rented a space with her band and closest collaborators in an attempt to make music under extraordinary circumstances. The result was her second EP, soft thing, released in 2021 and supported by long-awaited live dates in North America. soft thing made it onto the longlist for Canada’s prestigious Polaris Music Prize. LOONY released singles in 2023 and 2024, including “Old Friends,” “A Good Night,” “Too Attached,” and “Counting Thunder.” All of these ended up on her self-titled debut album, ‘LOONY’.
