2025 CONTEMPORARY INDIGENOUS ARTIST OR GROUP OF THE YEAR | Adrian Sutherland | | The JUNO Awards

One listen to Adrian Sutherland and you’ll know he’s unlike anyone else. Born and raised in Canada’s Far North, the roots-rocker-with-heart from Attawapiskat First Nation has the voice of a songbird, a boatload of talent, and an ocean of muses from the coastal waters of James Bay. His melding of roots, rock, folk and blues draws inspiration from his northern life, his traditional lands, and his Cree culture and language. His presence moves people, his music touches hearts, and his meaningful messages ripple far beyond stages.

Adrian’s sophomore album, Precious Diamonds, was produced by former GRAMMY winner Colin Linden. It features two songs written in Omushkegowuk Cree – marking the first time Adrian is making music in his first language. As one of the only professional musicians who resides in an isolated fly-in First Nation, Adrian carries authentic first-hand perspective on issues like contaminated water, food insecurity, addictions, and mental health. His story has captured the attention of significant media like CTV’s The Social, Etalk, and CNN Entertainment. He is writing a book for Penguin Random House Canada, and cares deeply about many causes. At this important time of reconciliation, Adrian is hopeful for Canadians to walk together in love and respect.
