2025 CLASSICAL COMPOSITION OF THE YEAR | Gabriel Dharmoo | | The JUNO Awards

Gabriel Dharmoo’s artistic practice encompasses musical composition, vocal performance, interdisciplinary arts and research.

His instrumental works have been performed across five continents. He has received the Canada Council for the Arts Jules Léger Prize, the Conseil Québécois de la Musique Opus Award, the Canadian Music Centre’s Harry Freedman Recording Award, the MusCan Student Composer Competition, the SOCAN Jan V. Matejcek Award, the Canada Council for the Arts Robert Fleming Prize, the Fernand-Lindsay Prix d’Europe composition prize, as well as six prizes from the SOCAN Foundation Awards for Young Composers.

His solo show Anthropologies imaginaires (2014) has toured internationally and was awarded at the Amsterdam Fringe Festival (2015) and the SummerWorks Performance Festival (2016). Created around his drag persona, his solo production Bijuriya (2022) was created at Montréal Arts Interculturels and toured across Canada.

His work around voice, theatricality and character is featured on his album Quelques fictions (2020). He is also a member of the experimental vocal collective Phth and active as a collaborator and performer for a variety of projects, including inter-traditional musical projects in Montreal and in Berlin.

He holds a PhD degree in research-creation from the Individualized Program of Concordia University.
