2024 CONTEMPORARY INDIGENOUS ARTIST OR GROUP OF THE YEAR | Zoon | | The JUNO Awards

Bekka Ma’iingan (Bay-ka Mo-Een-Gan) is the latest release from Zoon, the moniker of multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and composer Daniel Monkman. Layering honest songwriting with lush orchestration, Bekka Ma’iingan is a natural progression for Zoon. Building off of their Polaris Music Prize shortlisted, and internationally regaled debut album, Bleached Wavves, Bekka Ma’iingan continues to explore their Indigenous and life experience, and while still clutching to the unresolved, moves us more softly and sweepingly towards acceptance.

Bekka Ma’iingan sees Monkman embracing their wide range of friends and collaborators, with string arrangements by Owen Pallett, and regular appearances by long standing collaborators Michael Peter Olsen and Andrew McLeod (also known as Sunnsetter). Grammy Award winning Mark Lawson mixed the album, and in a burst of creative collaboration, after meeting in Montreal, Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo played on album track “Niizh Manidoowig (2 Spirit)”.

Bekka Ma’iingan has received glowing reviews from Pitchfork, KEXP, Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, and The Fader, among others. Ever inspired and never slowing down, Zoon has recently had supporting tour dates with Soccer Mommy, The Rural Alberta Advantage, Royal Canoe, and Land of Talk, in addition to multiple dates as a core member of OMBIIGIZI.
