2023 INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM OF THE YEAR | Esmerine | | The JUNO Awards

Esmerine is a Canadian modern chamber music group that incorporates genres such as post rock, drone music, post punk, and Turkish folk. Founded in Montreal in 2000 by Bruce Cawdron (Godpseed You! Black Emperor) and Beckie Foon (Thee Silver Mt. Zion, Saltland), current members also include bassist Philippe Charbonneau and multi-instrumentalist Brian Sanderson. The band has released seven albums. La Lechuza (2011), Dalmak (2013), Lost Voices (2015), Mechanics Of Dominion (2018) and Everything Was Forever Until It Was No More (2022) were released on Constellation to broad acclaim, with each album grounded in a specific set of collaborations that expanded the band’s sonic and stylistic palette, while remaining anchored by Cawdron’s mallet playing (chiefly on marimba) and Foon’s expressive cello. Dalmak was awarded Instrumental Album of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2014. Their album Lost Voices was nominated for Instrumental Album of the Year and won the Album Package of the year at the Juno Awards of 2016, and Mechanics Of Dominion was nominated for the Album Package of the year at the Juno Awards 2018.
