Andrés Vial (pronounced Vee-al) is a pianist and composer from Montreal.
He has performed with Peter Bernstein, Greg Cohen, Ingrid Jensen, Malika Tirolien (Bokanté), Ivan Neville, Michael Blake, Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, Kevin Dean, Al McLean, Kalmunity, Gamelan Giri Kedaton, The Barr Brothers, Bassekou Kouyate and many others.
Active as a leader and sideman, he has performed at over 50 festivals around the world, most recently appearing at the 2019 Vancouver International Jazz Festival and 2019 OFF Festival in Montreal.
He has released 5 albums as a leader, which have been reviewed positively in Downbeat Magazine, Cadence Magazine and The New York City Jazz Record among others.
His 2019 album, Gang of Three, features original compositions in a trio setting with Dezron Douglas on bass and Eric McPherson on drums. The album was positively reviewed in Downbeat Magazine by Alain Druout, who wrote: “”As a composer and an improviser, the bandleader constantly is focused on melody. Throughout the trio date, his solos often are well paced and thoughtful, and serve his design.”
Vial has also composed music for films by Ryan McKenna, Kaveh Nabatian, Iphigénie Marcoux-Fortier, Karen van Ameringen and Marites Carino, and for contemporary dancers including Tentacle Tribe and Meena Murugesan.”
