2012 | Roots & Traditional Album of the Year: Group | The Deep Dark Woods | | The JUNO Awards

The Deep Dark Woods wake the ghosts of Appalachia with their prairie gothic pyre-side tales. The band’s unflinching pursuit of steadiness between decadence and minimalism is guided at every turn by their intuitive ability to balance grit, clarity, drive and restraint with a sure focus on experimentation. The five-piece from Saskatoon offers earnest, carefully considered words that float on unfaltering harmonies framed with subtle orchestration; songs delve into the shadowy corners of folk music traditions. The new, self-produced album, THE PLACE I LEFT BEHIND, carries on a legacy of successive high water marks for soulful songcraft. The album is released on Six Shooter Records in Canada and Sugar Hill Records in the U.S., Europe and Australia. The Deep Dark Woods caught critics’ ears with 2009’s WINTER HOURS. The Deep Dark Woods won Best Roots Group at the 2009 Western Canadian Music Awards, and Ensemble of the Year at the 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards. The band also had the runaway winner in CBC’s Great Canadian Song Quest with “Charlie’s (Is Coming Down)” — a song about Good Time Charlie’s in Regina.
