7 Questions With Chiiild - The JUNO Awards

Get to know 2022 Alternative Album of the Year Presented by CBC Music nominee, Chiiild in our “7 Questions With” series where we speak with first-time JUNO Award nominees from all genres.

From Montreal, Canada, Chiiild has spent years honing a unique blend of Pop, R&B, Soul and Jazz behind closed doors and is ready to release their debut album, “Hope For Sale”. Chiiild uses music to tell stories about diversity, ask questions about humanity, and unify people over shared personal experiences. Taking influence from music as diverse as D’angelo, Tame Impala, Pink Floyd and Marvin Gaye, he’s created an expansive timeless sound that is uniquely genre- bending yet still somehow reminiscent of something you’ve heard, or felt, before.

1. How did it feel to be nominated for a JUNO?

It felt great to be acknowledged by the music community I grew up with. It feels as though I was able to give back to my roots with my music.

2. Who are your biggest musical influences?

My biggest musical influences are Bon Iver, Kanye West, and Arcade Fire.

3. What are 3 items you require when you’re on-tour?

Cold Brew coffee, iPad/AirPods, and my pre-show playlist!

4. What do you think is the best song you’ve ever released? What’s the story behind it?

They all hold a special place in my heart so it is tough to choose. That is for other people to tell me. I think all of music works to tell stories about diversity and find meaning in humanity and shared personal experiences.

5. Which artist would you like to collaborate with most?

Arcade Fire

6. What has been your favorite performance of your career?

This past fall I got to play my very first headline show in New York at Mercury Lounge on my birthday. The crowd’s energy was so electric and we even performed ‘Gone’ twice which we have never done before.

7. What’s next for you?

Winning the JUNOS hopefully! I am working on new music – more on that soon!
