2015 | Francophone Album of the Year | Philippe B | | The JUNO Awards

Critically-acclaimed singer-songwriter Philippe B makes timeless classic French pop tunes. Following the release of his third album, Variations fantômes, he, along with the Molinari Quartet and a chamber orchestra, performed sold-out shows in Montreal. Between these concerts and the composition of his fourth studio album, Ornithologie, la nuit (April 2014), Philippe B put his multiple talents to good use by producing albums for Groenland, Isabelle Boulay, Les soeurs Boulay and Carl-Éric Hudon. In addition to lending a hand to Pierre Lapointe on the song “Les Callas”, he composed the original soundtrack for Éric Morin’s film, Chasse au Godard d’Abbittibbi.
Philippe B reasserts his strong songwriting skills as well as his enviable position on the Francophone musical landscape with this self-produced opus. Abandoning the classical music samples, the key element of his previous effort, Philippe creates here a late-night soundtrack, both modern and vintage, by juxtaposing wind instruments with female vocals.
Translating Philippe’s nightbird tendencies, Ornithologie, la nuit describes the course of a protagonist from the shadows to the light. Spread out over the course of one year, the album accompanies the main character on his search for meaning and daily pleasures in order to achieve healing as the year progresses.
