The 2017 JUNO Awards are offsetting CO2 with Less Emissions!Mar 20, 2017
For years CARAS has been putting sustainability at the forefront of the JUNO Awards. In this post, we’re going to look at offsets by explaining what offsetting is, where Less’ offsets come from and when you should consider offsetting your own emissions.
Since 2010, CARAS has taken steps to reduce the carbon footprint of operations and offset emissions resulting from travel to and from JUNO Week events as well as heating and cooling of event venues. This year marks the fourth time CARAS has chosen Less Emissions, ranked as Canada’s highest quality carbon offset provider by The David Suzuki Foundation and The Pembina Institute.
What is offsetting?
Offsetting is a mechanism that allows individuals and organizations to address their environmental impact. Carbon offsets are designed to help mitigate the emissions associated with one activity (such as air travel) with another activity elsewhere that avoids or reduces an equivalent amount of emissions. For example, the impact of greenhouse gases (GHGs) associated with a flight from Vancouver to Ottawa may be neutralized by preventing the release of an equivalent amount of GHGs through the implementation of a renewable energy or energy efficiency project anywhere in the world.
When should you choose offsets?
With Less Emissions Inc., CARAS is following an easy, 3-step approach to reducing climate change impacts and offsetting emissions:
- Conserve. First and foremost, CARAS finds ways to minimize emissions—such as designing event sets with energy-saving LED technology and opting to travel by train over plane.
- Switch to Green. CARAS switches to environmentally lower-impact alternatives for required products and services. For example, CARAS is choosing Bullfrog Power—Less’ sister company—to be the green energy provider for the 2017 JUNO Awards and choosing Bullfrog’s new green fuel offering for the JUNO Express powered by VIA Rail Canada.
- Offset. Finally, CARAS works with Less, a trusted source of high quality offsets, to offset those emissions that could not be further reduced or avoided.
Ever thought about purchasing offset for your own travel? You can! Through Lessen My Flight™, Less’ independently audited flight offset program, anyone can calculate and purchase offsets from high quality, certified emission reduction projects to help mitigate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with air travel. Less’ high quality carbon offsets can also be used to offset the climate change impacts of other emission generating activities. To learn more, visit less.ca.
