St. John’s, NL – January 13, 2010–The countdown for the biggest music event of the year began this morning at the Delta Hotel as Melanie Berry, President and CEO of The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) joined Ken Marshall, chair of the 2010 JUNO Awards Host Committee and the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation to announce the line-up of events for Ruckus on the Edge, a four-day music festival showcasing local talent taking place during the 2010 JUNO Week (April 12-18).

“In just 89 days Ruckus on the Edge will take the city by storm with its dynamic program that reflects the musical diversity in this province,” said Marshall. “We’ve got a program that will showcase the incredible talent and creativity in our local musical community and will appeal to all music lovers no matter what their tastes are.”

Ruckus on the Edge will kick off on Monday April 12 with a mid-day launch and random acts of music taking place at undisclosed places all over the city. The kick-off will be followed by nightly performances featuring Jazz, Blues, Gospel, Aboriginal, Francophone, World and Rock musicians. In addition, organizers have developed a series of educational, environmental and legacy initiatives

“In addition to our exciting line-up of musical events, the 2010 JUNO Awards Host Committee is excited about our community programming. Music Our Way – On the Edge: The 2010 JUNO Awards go to School will see performers visiting schools across the province to deliver workshops or mentoring students through distance learning,” says Marshall. “We’re also seeking to re-establish music scholarships originally spearheaded by Music Newfoundland and Labrador so that we can further support the growth of the music industry in our Province.”

Ramping up the momentum, Marshall also launched the official Ruckus on the Edge website with a contest to find a song that captures the vibrancy of the local music scene. The contest winner will get the chance to perform at a Ruckus on the Edge event, will be given studio time donated by Record Time Productions, and will have his or her song featured on the Ruckus on the Edge website. The contest is open to any amateur musician in Newfoundland and Labrador. The deadline for submissions to the song contest is Sunday, February 28 at 2:00pm Newfoundland Standard Time. Further details are available online at www.ruckusontheedge.com.

Marshall also acknowledged the volunteer efforts needed to host an event of this magnitude. “Given the scale of the Ruckus on the Edge and the JUNO Week activities we’re looking for the support of our community to make this the best music event this country has ever seen.”

To help recruit the extra hands, Ruckus on the Edge is hosting a Volunteer Recruitment Night on Monday, January 18 in the Foran Green Room at St. John’s City Hall from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm.
Volunteers will be needed to fill various roles including media assistants, hospitality and pageantry, administration, runners and volunteer coordinator assistants. Interested individuals can apply by visiting www.ruckusontheedge.com, emailing volunteers@juno2010nl.ca or by calling 757-7094.
