CARAS AND THE JUNO AWARDS ARE COMMITED TO EVENT SUSTAINABILITY

The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) and the JUNO Awards are committed to event sustainability. Since 2008, CARAS and the JUNO Awards have worked closely with their partner Strategin Solutions to develop a comprehensive strategy for improving the sustainability of JUNO Awards events.

For the third consecutive year, CARAS will be using CSA Z2010, a national event sustainability management standard, to guide the delivery of the JUNO Awards events. Use of the standard involves engaging and encouraging all JUNO partners to minimize and manage waste, decrease the consumption of water and energy, reduce the carbon footprint, and purchase environmentally and socially responsible goods and services. Venues, accommodations, production companies, caterers, printers, and transport providers are all on board and playing a key part in facilitating the achievement of sustainability objectives.

Several key partnerships also greatly support the JUNO Awards event sustainability strategy. For the fifth year in a row, CARAS and the JUNO Awards have partnered with Bullfrog Power, who is providing all of the 2013 JUNO Awards events, accommodations, and the CARAS office with clean, renewable electricity. In the third year of its partnership, Carbonzero is providing carbon offset credits to offset emissions resulting from flights purchased by CARAS, production crew travel, and ground transportation. 2013 is also the fourth consecutive year CARAS will be working with Me to We Style, who will be producing all JUNO branded apparel with the use of organic cotton and viscose from bamboo.

What You Can Do
If you are planning to attend the 2013 JUNO Awards events, you too have a key role to play in contributing to event sustainability. Below is a list of suggested actions that you can take:

  • Travel to and from JUNO Week events by foot, bicycle or public transit
  • Dispose of waste and recyclables in appropriate receptacles
  • Use your own reusable mug and/or water bottle when possible
  • Get to know the local culture and purchase locally produced goods
  • Turn off any lights, TVs, air conditioners or heaters when leaving your hotel room
  • Opt into towel and linen reuse programs if your hotel offers the service
  • Book your travel via the most direct route to reduce travel related emissions
  • Offset greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated as a result of your travel
